Porn is of all times. Ancient Romans were very fond of decorating the walls of their brothels with erotic art. There are doubts about the reason, if it was to arouse the clientele or to show the services offered remains unknown. In the ancient Roman city of Pompeii many depictions of porn were discovered. There are even tours you can take that will show you all the uncovered art found there.

Pompeii’s neighboring city Herculaneum also has their fair share of ancient porn depictions. The city also got buried by Vesuvius in the same eruption that covered Pompeii. A lot of art was preserved perfectly because of this. A lot of the erotic art found in both cities is now displayed in a special room at the Gabinetto Secreto, or Secret Cabinet of the National Archeological Museum in Naples.

Pompeii had locked metal cabinets constructed over erotic frescos, which gentlemen could watch for a fee. “people of mature age and respected morals”, which back then basically meant “educated men”, the displays were not for ladies. The peep shows operated in Pompeii ’till the 1960’s.
